Business Names

Enhance the accuracy of your Business Data by matching it to our Business Names Database

Overview

Overview

Business names have always been a problem for those involved in Address Management. A large number of businesses go out of business before Local Authorities can capture them and no supplier of address data, whether it’s Ordnance Survey or the Royal Mail have ever been able to provide a consistently accurate and up to date source.

Our database of over 2 million, independently sourced, business names is  the most accurate and up to date Business Names dataset available.

We have sourced a constantly updated database, which we supply to our customers along with monthly updates. The data is designed to reflect real life scenarios i.e. the name above the door, not the parent company and not a simple postal address.

Although one of the primary interests in the business database is the acquisition of the business name so that it can be added to the address, the database also contains a wealth of additional business data.

This business data can be used to build a complete picture of the business landscape with uses in both local government and the emergency services.

Where Does The Data Come From?

Where Does The Data Come From?

The data is created by 118 Information, which is the same company that supplies the likes of Bing, 118118 and the BT Phonebook, and unlike most directory companies that rely on advertising revenue for their income, all this company does is sell data. Poor data doesn’t sell and that’s why we chose them.

They have a call centre of 65 people whose sole job it is to ensure that the data is consistently up to date and rather than updating records alphabetically or chronologically, they prioritise those businesses that are more likely to change e.g. a corner shop is more likely to change than a multi-national head office and a recently formed business is more volatile than an established business.

Local Authorities

Local Authorities

Almost all council departments will be able to benefit from an accurate source of business names. Whether a department needs to send mailings, or whether they need to the status of a property so they know whether to collect Council Tax or Business rates, having up to date, accurate business names will benefit several departments.

An up to date business name means that post will get through.

An up to date business name will ensure Business Rates are collected from new Businesses.

With the average Business Rates at around £9,000 per year, it is clearly going to be a significant lost to council income if any businesses are not known and therefore not billed. Our business names data can be used as an additional way of identifying those that should be paying but aren’t.

Emergency Services

Emergency Services

Unlike all other sources of business names, which are designed for use in marketing, we have worked to engineer our data so that it is specifically designed to fulfil the requirements of the emergency services.

The bottom line is that when people dial 999, they’re not going to say they’re outside ’17b High Street’, but rather that they’re outside ‘Melvin’s Tyres’. The benefit comes from having ‘Melvin’s Tyres’ and tens of thousands of other businesses in your systems, namely Command and Control, and through that be better able to mobilise to business premises.

With updates available every month, another advantage is the ability to identify new businesses, which in addition to mobilising, gives an opportunity for those new businesses to be targeted as part of community engagement, such as the organising of fire safety checks.

The data will also be supplied with the business type, which will allow for better risk assessments. Certain business types will attract more crime or be at a higher risk of fire, so knowing specifically where these are will enable a better deployment of resources and a reduction in future risk.

The Data

The Data

Although one of the primary interests in the business database is the acquisition of the business name so that it can be appended to the address, the database also contains a wealth of additional business data.

Each record contains a UPRN and is available to export in the latest DTF formats. With the business data being matched to AddressBase, all of this will be accessible via GIS.

Our data doesn’t just contain the Business Name and Address.

Employee numbers can be used to show the sizes of business or employment potential, whilst SIC codes and market sectors can show the demographic spread of businesses.

Optional business data is available in the form of contact details, which can be used to better engage with businesses to promote growth, gain a contact reference or for contacting businesses to arrange fire safety checks.
