Because of its inherent flexibility and customisation, the XDM has an almost infinite amount of applications and uses.
Below can be found some case studies showing actual implementations of the XDM, which are followed by further examples of potential usage.
Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council
Wirral MBC use the XDM to auto populate each Property in their gazetteer with the Ordnance Survey map reference tile.
They also use it to add the Land Use code and description against each BLPU, so are able to indicate within the gazetteer whether the property is a bungalow, semi-detached etc.
They additionally use the XDM to add notes against each property. This free form field can be used by them to either add property information that in effect 'has nowhere else to go' or allows them to add notes that are of relevance to other team members.

An example of a free form notes field in the XDM
Herefordshire Council
Because of the rural nature of Herefordshire, the Council were having difficulties in adapting BS7666 addresses to their unique situation. In many cases, addresses would be more like a description than an address e.g. Primrose Cottage, 2 miles due South of Urisshay Common.
Herefordshire use the XDM to add additional fields against each property to store these postal addresses. They still have the fully compliant BS7666 address, which is exported into other council systems for internal use, but now also have the ability to export postal addresses for when the Council needs to write to its customers.
Other Potential Uses:
Populating CRMs
Many
organisations are now linking their central gazetteers with their CRM systems in order that their customer service teams have available to them the most up to date address data.
With the XDM this can be taken a stage further and in addition to the address data and existing BS7666 property data, information stored and maintained in the XDM can also be exported to the CRM.
Having a property's departmental contacts in the XDM for easier answering of customer contacts
The ability to store, maintain and export a whole variety of customer-useful information
from your gazetteer directly to the CRM, will allow customer services far quicker and easier access to that data.
This greater availibility and better accessing of the data will in turn increase customer service effectiveness
will ultimately result in happier and more satisfied customers.
Reporting Made Easy
With all information about a property held in the same location, the running of reports is made quick and easy.
One can either run a report against a property to get all relevant information about it or run a report against a particular type of Xtended Data, and 'pull out' all properties matching the report criteria.
Simple examples of this would be to 'pull out' all properties with a particular council tax band or those that fall within a particular parish boundary.

Run a report to find all properties completed after a certain date
In addition to the running of reports, the ability to acquire this information quickly and easily can lead to huge efficiency savings when there is a requirement to notify properties that fall only into a particular type of category.
If a long term weather forecast suggested an increased possibility of flooding then it would clearly be a waste of time and money to send warnings and advice to properties built upon a hill. The XDM would enable only properties falling within specific flood designations to be extracted
and subsequently contacted.
