A gazetteer is a register of geographical information concerning places and locations, rivers, mountains and so on. This information is used in conjunction with maps, working as an index to the topographical and structure location information. In addition to this, a gazetteer may also contain demographical information such as population, numeracy rates etc.
The history of gazetteers dates back to first century China and has evolved beyond usage just in geography. Modern gazetteers come in a wide variety of formats, covering hugely different subject matters and are used throughout government and industry. Most modern gazetteers will be stored digitally on computers and will often include the ability to see the data spatially via digital mapping technology.
