The National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) is a database containing within it over 32 million address records covering the whole of England and Wales. It is the amalgamation of all the BS7666 compliant address data held by local authorities that they have compiled within their Local Land and Property Gazetteers (LLPG).
It was in 1990 that the Local Government Management Board intially devised the concept of a National Land and Property Gazetteer and the NLPG is currently managed by private firm Intelligent Addressing on behalf of the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) (a government organisation that cordinates and promotes good practice within local authorites).
In addition to postal addresses, the National Land and Property Gazetteer also contains non-addressable properties that have uses within planning and the emergency services.
The National Land and Property Gazetteer is now available to commercial enterprises, who are able to utilise the data in a vast number of ways. From insurance firms to utilities companies, the possible applications of the National Land and Property Gazetteer are tremendous.
With all 376 local authorities in England and Wales now part of the scheme, the National Land and Property Gazetteer can be considered to be the first national collection of address data since the Domesday Book.
