5 Reasons why your Organisation Should Adopt AddressBase.
Aligned Assets Marketing Co-ordinator Anton Clark looks at the 5 Reasons why your Organisation Should Adopt AddressBase.
It’s the most up to date, accurate address database available in Great Britain.
The AddressBase products contain over 40 million address records. They are constructed through the amalgamation of three existing datasets: The Local Government’s National Land and Property Gazetteer, Ordnance Survey’s OS MasterMap® Address Layer 2 and the Royal Mail’s PAF (Postcode Address File). Combined, these three datasets are known as the National Address Gazetteer and it is from this the AddressBase Products are formed.
The AddressBase records also include historical and alternative addresses. Knowing that 28 Monitor Drive and Scotch Cottage are the same property could be pivotal information for any organisation with a process that includes an address component.
Frequent Updates
To ensure accuracy the AddressBase products are being constantly updated and updates are released every 6 weeks to reflect this. Due to the volume of records involved, these updates are offered as Change Only Updates (COUs). These COUs contain records or files that have changed since the previous release. This eliminates the need to reload the entire database every time a change is made.
The UPRN
UPRN is an acronym for Unique Property Reference Number and is a unique twelve-digit number assigned to every unit of land and property recorded by local government, who have a statutory obligation to record all changes in property details, including all new builds. Each record, across all AddressBase products, contains a UPRN.
Every property in Great Britain has a UPRN and because they are distributed centrally, once used, that UPRN can never be repeated, which ensures the consistent accuracy of address data.
There are many reasons why your organisation needs UPRNs, but chief among them is the ability to uniquely identify properties and therefore remove the possibility of error. There are many ways to spell an address, but only ever one UPRN.
Anyone Can Benefit
Almost anyone can benefit from the AddressBase products. Large or small, private or public, any process that contains an address component will benefit from the more accurate, the more detailed and the more comprehensive nature of the AddressBase products.
We provide AddressBase to Local Authorities, The Emergency Services, NHS Organisations and Utility companies. This is by no means a comprehensive list though. Any organisation whose processes involve an addressing component could benefit from using AddressBase
It Can Be Visualised in MapInfo
The AddressBase Toolkit can be used to connect your AddressBase database to MapInfo to provide a visualisation of the data.
Using the AddressBase Toolkit will allow you to:
- Generate a formatted view of the AddressBase Data for use within desktop GIS or Web GIS.
- Allow MapInfo users to search the AddressBase Data. A users search entry is scored using the Lucene scoring algorithm which has been configured to cater for spelling, typos and common abbreviations.
