From the Boardroom… Christmas 2016
Written by Andy Hird, Managing Director of Aligned Assets
What a year 2016 has been for Aligned Assets. Not only have we celebrated our 20th anniversary, we’ve released several new products, welcomed new staff into the fold, taken our address management solutions international and welcomed a baby or two into the Aligned Assets family.
We’re very proud of the innovative products we’ve developed this year. Symphony International and SNN International were both developed to aid Address Management and the Naming and Numbering of Streets outside of the UK. We drew on our extensive knowledge of creating solutions to manage LLPG and AddressBase data to develop these solutions and whilst our first international project in Ghana is still ongoing, we’ve discovered more than one scenario that could travel back and influence the solutions we provide for our UK based customers.
As well as the new International products, this year we also revived our interest in Augmented Reality. What started out as an idea that was shelved a couple of years ago was reignited by the Pokémon Go! craze in the summer and has turned into one of our most exciting new developments for years. With uses already being tested by Local Authorities and Emergency Services and with scenarios being prepared for use Internationally and within the private sector, this has the potential to be as versatile as our gazetteer systems.
Since the first demonstration at one of our Customer User Groups in September, the buzz around Symphony AR has continued to grow and grow, almost at the same speed new features have been developed and added – our current favourite is the image recognition view.
We wouldn’t have been able to develop any of these new innovations without the feedback and guidance we’ve received from our customers – everything we do is done with you in mind and wouldn’t be half as successful without your encouragement and passion for your important work.
It was a pleasure for us to see and meet so many of our customers at the various events we attended and ran this year, including the GeoPlace Conference and the GeoData London showcase. Sandwiched in between these two events were our two Customer User Groups held in London and Crewe. The London User Group doubled as our 20th Anniversary celebration and the lure of cake drew over 40 different customers for what we think is our biggest user group yet.
A special mention must also go to Charnwood Borough Council, NHS Wales, Central Bedfordshire Council, Avon and Somerset Police, Leicestershire FRS, Derbyshire FRS, Nottinghamshire FRS, North Wales Police, the London Boroughs of Kingston and Sutton, Mansfield Borough council and Brentwood Council who have all become customers this year. Welcome to you all!
It’s not just the Aligned Assets family outside the office that has grown this year. We’ve also welcomed two new members of the support team into the fold along with some internal changes as one of our developers became a consultant. Our staff have also been busy outside of the office with the birth of one child in November and another one due in January. Some of the older children of the Aligned Assets staff kindly helped us with this year’s digital Christmas Card which can be found here and which i’m sure you’ll agree showcases an array of talent.
Finally, I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and that 2017 is happy and prosperous.
